The Democracy Coalition has a core steering group as well as members from a wide range of voluntary and statutory organisations with an interest in promoting youth democracy. We are are always looking for new members to shape our future direction. Membership is very flexible. You can either play an active role by getting involved in the activities of the steering group or you can just opt just to receive invites and be kept up to date with our ideas. Members pageChair:The British Youth Council (BYC)
The BYC is the national youth council in the UK and an umbrella body for many other youth organisations. Run by 13 trustees aged 18-25, its membership ranges from local youth councils to large youth organisations such as the Scouts, the National Union of Students and youth wings of trade unions. The BYC seeks to promote the active citizenship of young people, helping them to develop the skills and abilities to participate fully within decision-making organisations, the communities in which they live and society as a whole. The BYC is the current chair of the Democracy Coalition's steering group.
Secretariat:The Hansard Society
The Hansard Society is an independent, non-partisan educational charity which promotes parliamentary democracy. Their work is based on the belief that an effective parliamentary system is central to a successful democracy. They support this by focusing on citizenship education, strengthening the democratic process and encouraging dialogue between young people and their representatives. This involves a range of activities such as mock elections in schools; providing national curriculum resources; and online platforms where young people and parliamentarians can debate political issues.
Core Steering Group:The Electoral Commission
The Electoral Commission are an independent body that was set up by Parliament. Their mission is to foster public confidence and participation by promoting integrity, involvement and effectiveness in the democratic process. The Commission's Do Politics team aims to encourage young people to get involved in our democracy through offering support, advice and resources to people and organisations working with young people. The Electoral Commission is the current secretariat of the DCCYP.
Children's Rights' Alliance for England (CRAE)
CRAE is a coalition of over 340 voluntary and statutory organisations committed to the fullest implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. We lobby for laws and policies to be fully compliant with children's human rights, we monitor Government action on implementing the Convention on the Rights of the Child and other human rights instruments, and we disseminate children's rights information to the public.
The National Youth Agency
The National Youth Agency supports those involved in young people's personal and social development and works to enable all young people to fulfil their potential within a just society. They provide resources to improve work with young people and its management; create and demonstrate innovation in services and methods; support the leadership of organisations to manage change; influence public perception and policy; and secure standards of education and training for youth work.
UK Youth Parliament (UKYP)
The UKYP aims to give the young people of the UK between the ages of 11 and 18 a voice, which will be heard and listened to by local and national government, providers of services for young people and other agencies who have an interest in the views and needs of young people. There are currently over 300 elected members of the Youth Parliament.
X-Change @ Electoral Reform Society
X-Change is the youth and student wing of the Electoral Reform Society. As well as campaigning for electoral reform they also promote schools councils and encourage debate around Votes at 16.
